Our cancer education group in Miami has produced programs for doctors and nurses for 20 years, and we are one of the most widely utilized sources of information for these healthcare professionals in the United States. On this special edition of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Update, three nationally respected lymphoma research experts present their approach to discussing this disease with their patients. This audio education program was created specifically to be utilized by both clinicians and patients, as follows:

Physicians and other healthcare providers: On this program, clinical investigators who specialize in lymphoma describe how they discuss various diagnostic and treatment modalities with patients.

Patients: This program is not meant to substitute for the individualized opinion that a personal physician can provide. However, the experts interviewed can be a valuable supplement to understanding this disease and are a credible source of information on NHL research. The speakers and topics on this program are as follows:

John P Leonard, MD discusses diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, the most commonly occurring form of NHL. Dr Leonard provides an overview on the treatment options, side effects and the experiences of one particular patient in his practice.
Mitchell R Smith, MD, PhD discusses mantle-cell lymphoma, a much less common and only recently recognized type of NHL. Dr Smith presents a patient from his practice with mantle-cell lymphoma and discusses the role of new clinical trials in this disease.
Brad S Kahl, MD discusses a common and controversial type of NHL called follicular lymphoma — one of the so-called indolent lymphomas. Dr Kahl reviews the role of the monoclonal antibody rituximab, one of the most common initial treatments for patients with all forms of NHL. He also discusses the objectives of a major national study, which he is leading. This trial is attempting to determine how long patients should receive rituximab therapy in this situation.
